Living Dead Dolls are not a nostalgia play. They are a genuine collector market with documented scarcity, a passionate secondary ecosystem, and a grading curve that punishes careless storage. Mezco Toyz launched the line in 1999, and what started as a horror-adjacent curiosity has become one of the most consistent long-run doll collectibles in the world. First produced by Ed Long and Damien Glonek, the line now spans 23 mainline series plus dozens of special editions, exclusives, and licensed crossovers. This guide cuts through the noise and tells you exactly which pieces deserve shelf space and serious money in 2025.

The best Living Dead Dolls to collect are the early Series 1 to 5 dolls, the blue chips of the line, followed by the scarce modern releases from Series 20 to 23. Scarcity, sealed condition and character mythology drive the prices, and this guide ranks the dolls worth chasing across all 23 series.

Understanding the Living Dead Dolls Market Before You Buy

How Pull Rates and Production Numbers Work

Mezco does not publish official production figures, which is a deliberate move that sustains secondary market tension. However, collector communities have tracked enough sales data over 25 years to establish reliable scarcity tiers. Early series, particularly Series 1 through Series 4, had genuinely limited print runs before the line gained mainstream traction. As a result, those early pieces command serious premiums. Series 1 figures in sealed condition regularly clear 10x their original retail price on auction platforms. Meanwhile, later series benefit from better articulation and accessory quality but carry higher original retail prices and broader distribution.

Additionally, the condition hierarchy here mirrors the vintage toy market precisely. Mint In Box with intact death certificates and accessories beats everything else. The death certificate, a small printed card included with each doll, is disproportionately important to value. Lose it, and you lose 20 to 30 percent of the piece’s market value immediately.

Grading and Storage Realities

Unlike Funko Pops or Pokemon cards, Living Dead Dolls do not yet have a dominant third-party grading service with universal collector adoption. That said, the AFA grading system applies and collectors who plan to hold for five-plus years should consider encapsulation for their highest-value pieces. Beyond that, UV-resistant display cases are non-negotiable. The fabric costumes on these dolls fade aggressively under direct light, and faded fabric on a Series 1 piece can drop value by 40 percent versus a pristine example.

Series 1 to Series 5: The Foundation Tier

Why Early Series Are the Blue Chips

Series 1 is where the Living Dead Dolls mythology was established, and the market reflects that origin status accordingly. The original five characters, Posey, Sadie, Dead Jester, Eggzorcist, and Damien, remain the most recognized figures in the entire line. Damien from Series 1 is arguably the single most iconic sculpt Mezco produced in this line. The character design is cohesive, the proportions are deliberately unsettling, and the piece anchors any serious collection immediately.

However, finding Series 1 figures in genuinely mint condition is harder than most buyers expect. These were sold at Hot Topic and Spencer’s Gifts retail locations in the early 2000s. Many were opened, displayed, and subjected to years of ambient light and humidity. For example, Sadie’s white dress is one of the most yellowing-prone fabrics in the entire run. Condition is everything at this tier.

Series 3 through Series 5 represent the best entry point for collectors who want early-series credibility without Series 1 pricing. These series introduced the themed packaging that became a hallmark of the line and included some of the strongest sculpt work of the early period.

Series 20 to Series 23: Where Modern Craftsmanship Peaks

The Quality Jump in Later Series

Mezco substantially upgraded production standards from Series 18 onward. The vinyl quality improved, costume detailing became more intricate, and accessory sets grew more elaborate. Series 21 and Series 23 represent the current creative high point of the mainline. Collectors who entered the hobby in the past three years are heavily weighted toward these later series, which creates interesting market dynamics because demand is high but production numbers were also larger.

That said, specific characters within a series matter enormously. Not every figure in a given series is equally desirable, and the secondary market reflects individual character appeal rather than series-wide pricing.

Desmodus: The Standout from Series 21

Series 21 has a clear standout piece. Desmodus from Series 21 is the vampire archetype executed with real conviction. The winged cape construction is technically ambitious for a mass-production collectible at this price point, the sculpted facial expression lands the horror aesthetic without tipping into parody, and the coloring on the fangs and eyes shows genuine attention to finishing detail. At €110, this piece sits at the high end of the modern series pricing but delivers proportionate quality. First-time buyers in the Living Dead Dolls market would do worse than starting here.
