Five hundred. That is the entire global edition size of the KAWS Stormtrooper Companion figure 2008, one of the most strategically restricted vinyl releases in the history of collectible art toys. The verdict here is unambiguous: this piece is worth buying, provided you can verify authenticity and absorb the significant secondary market premium. For serious collectors, it represents a rare convergence of two cultural juggernauts, Medicom Toy manufacturing, and an IP collaboration that Lucasfilm has never replicated at this scale. Do not hesitate if you find a clean, documented example.

What Is the KAWS Stormtrooper Companion Figure 2008?

KAWS joined forces with Lucasfilm’s Star Wars to collaborate on the franchise’s widely recognized Imperial soldier. Produced by Medicom Toy and OriginalFake, the KAWS Star Wars Stormtrooper Companion features a Stormtrooper painted cast vinyl figure with an inflated skull and the signature ‘X’ motif on its eyes, hands, and feet. This limited edition collectible, released on September 24, 2008, showcases KAWS’ signature style applied to the iconic Star Wars universe.

The figure measures 10.5 x 5 x 3.5 inches (13 x 9 cm) and carries an edition size of 500. The Star Wars inspired Companion was available only in person at the OriginalFake store in Tokyo. That geographic restriction alone tells you everything about the original demand dynamics: if you were not physically standing in Tokyo in September 2008, you missed the drop entirely. The figure carries a Lucasfilm copyright stamp reading “©2008 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved Designed by KAWS MEDICOM TOY 2008 CHINA” on the underside of its feet, which serves as a primary authentication marker today.

KAWS: The Artist Behind the Icon

KAWS, born Brian Donnelly in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1974, is an American artist and designer based in Brooklyn, best known for his monumental sculptures and hard-edge paintings featuring the COMPANION, a cartoon-derived figure with X-ed-out eyes, which has become among the most recognizable characters in contemporary art. It built his early reputation in the 1990s by subverting commercial billboard and bus shelter advertisements in New York City, Paris, and Tokyo, inserting his characters into existing imagery. The Stormtrooper Companion sits at the precise inflection point where that street credibility met blockbuster IP, and that tension gives it lasting cultural weight.

Moreover, KAWS’ momentum has only accelerated in 2026. He recently dropped a new UNIQLO capsule collection and confirmed plans for a Yankees and Dodgers logo collaboration reported by WWD. KAWS transitioned to gallery exhibitions in 1999 and began a series of high-profile brand collaborations, including Nike in 1999, UNIQLO in 2016, and Dior in 2019, extending his reach far beyond conventional art world audiences. Each new headline raises the floor on early, rare editions like this one.

The Case FOR Buying the KAWS Stormtrooper Companion Figure 2008

First, consider the edition arithmetic. Five hundred units, Tokyo-exclusive at drop, now scattered across private collections on multiple continents. The number of PSA-gradable, mint-in-box examples on the secondary market at any given time sits well below 50. Supply is effectively fixed and shrinking as figures get opened, displayed, or damaged. Meanwhile, demand from both KAWS collectors and Star Wars memorabilia collectors creates a permanently bifurcated buyer pool that keeps pressure on prices.

Second, the secondary market has proven this piece’s durability. Current listings on the gallery circuit reach into the $6,000 (about €5,350)-plus range, representing a multiple of roughly 30x on any reasonable estimate of original retail. That trajectory outperforms the vast majority of comparable 2008-era designer toy releases. In fact, the OriginalFake-era KAWS figures consistently command the highest multiples in his entire catalog precisely because that chapter of his output has closed permanently.

Scarcity, IP, and the Tokyo Exclusivity Premium

Additionally, the Tokyo OriginalFake exclusivity adds a layer of provenance that cannot be manufactured retroactively. Collectors who understand the Japanese market know that OriginalFake drops from this era carried an implicit cultural status that domestic US or European releases never replicated. The Japanese collector base treats original-run OriginalFake pieces with an institutional seriousness comparable to how Western collectors treat early Kaws gallery editions. Consequently, pristine examples sourced from Japanese provenance carry a meaningful premium over equivalent pieces with Western ownership histories.

Beyond that, KAWS’ institutional standing has never been stronger. KAWS’ work sits in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. Museum acquisition validates market longevity. Similarly, his ongoing 2026 UNIQLO artist residency and the Yankees/Dodgers collaboration signal that cultural relevance is not fading. Every new headline refreshes awareness of the broader KAWS catalog, and early limited editions benefit directly.

The Case AGAINST Buying the KAWS Stormtrooper Companion Figure 2008

However, this piece comes with real risks that serious buyers must price in honestly. The counterfeit problem is severe. The KAWS Stormtrooper Companion is among the most bootlegged action figures and collectibles in the designer toy market. Fake examples reach near-perfect visual fidelity, and many circulate without the correct foot stamp, proper box printing, or accurate vinyl density. If you cannot physically inspect the piece or obtain documentation of original purchase provenance, the authentication risk alone could wipe out any investment thesis.

Furthermore, condition grading on these figures is unforgiving. Box condition matters enormously to the top-tier buyer. A mint figure in a scuffed or split box loses 20-30% of its ceiling value instantly. Yellowing of the white vinyl, which occurs with UV exposure over 17 years, is irreversible and significantly reduces appeal. Even so, the piece retains strong collector value at lower condition grades; it simply will not reach auction record territory without a near-perfect example and full box.

Market Liquidity and Price Volatility

Still, liquidity is genuinely thin. Unlike open-edition KAWS figures that trade regularly across the secondary market, an edition of 500 means that weeks or months can pass between comparable sales events. That illiquidity cuts both ways: it insulates the price from flash crashes, but it also means that if you need to sell quickly, you will likely accept a discount. Therefore, treat this as a medium-to-long hold, not a flip vehicle.

In contrast to more accessible KAWS collectibles, the entry price here demands a serious financial commitment. The table below puts the Stormtrooper Companion in context against comparable KAWS pieces from the same era.

Who Should Buy This, and Who Should Skip It

Buy it if you collect the OriginalFake-era KAWS catalog with seriousness and completionism. If you already hold other 500-edition KAWS figures and understand the authentication process. And if you have a verified provenance trail and can absorb a 3-5 year hold without needing liquidity. Most importantly, buy it if you have a trusted authentication source and a price below $5,000 (about €4,460) for a mint-plus example. At that level, the risk/reward profile is genuinely compelling.

Skip it if your budget requires a short-term return. If you cannot verify the foot stamp and box provenance in person or through a certified authentication service. And if you are entering the KAWS Stormtrooper Companion figure market for the first time without prior experience grading designer vinyl. Instead, consider building your KAWS collection with verified pieces that offer clearer authentication paths and better liquidity, such as the KAWS Dissected Milo 2011 Vinyl Figure White or the KAWS Dissected Milo 2011 Brown Limited Edition of 500, both strong examples of the OriginalFake era with clear documentation.
