Gear 5 changed everything. When Eiichiro Oda finally unveiled Luffy’s awakened Zoan form during the Wano arc, the internet collapsed, merchandise departments scrambled, and figure manufacturers immediately understood they were sitting on a generation-defining design. Banpresto responded with the Grandista II line, and the Monkey D. Luffy Gear 5 Grandista II figure is the most ambitious entry in that lineup yet. This review is for collectors who need specifics: sculpt quality, display potential, resale trajectory, and how this piece stacks up against the broader Gear 5 figure market.

What the Grandista II Line Means for Collectors

Banpresto’s Premium Prize Figure Philosophy

First, understand the context. Banpresto operates under Bandai, and the Grandista series sits at the top of their prize figure hierarchy. These are not scale figures in the traditional sense. However, they aim for a premium aesthetic that blurs the line between prize and collector-grade product. The Grandista II format specifically targets the 25 to 28cm height range, giving sculptors room to articulate dynamic poses without sacrificing detail on facial expressions or costume texture.

For serious collectors, prize figures historically carried a stigma. That stigma is outdated. The Grandista II Luffy Gear 5 demonstrates paint application and sculpt precision that competes directly with lower-end scale releases from Kotobukiya or MegaHouse. Additionally, the price-to-quality ratio at the primary market is genuinely hard to argue with.

Pull Rates and Japanese Market Availability

In Japan, Grandista figures circulate through arcade prize machines, which means pull rates matter to secondary market pricing. Banpresto controls distribution tightly, and popular characters like Luffy in a high-profile form see intentional scarcity engineering after the initial prize run. As a result, secondary market prices in Japan on platforms like Surugaya and Mercari JP climb steadily within three to six months of the arcade debut. European collectors who source directly from retailers like Rare Inventory’s Luffy Gear 5 Grandista II listing benefit from this pricing window before secondary costs inflate.
