That is the biggest mistake in the GeGeGe no Kitaro merchandise space right now. Kitaro’s Father, the tragic human-form protagonist of Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe, carries more emotional weight per centimeter of PVC than almost anything FuRyu produced in 2024 or 2025. Serious anime figure collectors keep chasing Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen while a quietly devastating piece from one of Japan’s most culturally important franchises sits at a bargain price point. This guide exists to fix that mistake, and a few others you are probably making too.

Yes, the Kitaro’s Father Noodle Stopper Figure from FuRyu is absolutely worth buying, especially at €45. It captures the film’s human-form protagonist with sculpt quality that punches well above its prize-figure price tier. The franchise context, the film’s blockbuster status in Japan, and the figure’s role as a companion to the wider Birth of Kitaro merch lineup make this a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for the serious anime figure collector.

<div Many anime figure collectors hear “Noodle Stopper” and immediately think gimmick. That instinct is wrong, and it costs them good pieces. The Noodle Stopper Figure series by FuRyu is known for its innovative approach to figures, providing versatile uses and decorative options that integrate into daily routines. That is a polite way of saying what veteran collectors already know: FuRyu engineers the seated, perching design with genuine intention. The engineering constraint of making a figure balance on a cup’s edge forces sculptors to nail weight distribution, posture, and proportion in ways that upright statue poses simply do not require.

Additionally, the seated format suits Kitaro’s Father specifically. The figure depicts him in a seated position that allows him to perch gracefully on the edge of surfaces like noodle cups, shelves, or desks, dressed in his traditional attire with intricate details such as the folds in his clothing, the soft textures of his long flowing hair, and his serene yet thoughtful expression. That expression is the real achievement here. FuRyu captures his quiet devastation without melodrama, which mirrors the film’s own tonal restraint perfectly.

Explore the full collection

Figures, art toys & limited editions, shipped across Europe from France.

Shop now →

What the Sculpt Actually Delivers

Moreover, the multicolor paint application on this piece deserves specific attention. The figure is meticulously crafted from plastic, showcasing a vivid multicolor palette that brings the character to life. For a prize figure at this price, the shading on the hair and garment folds shows production effort you would expect at a higher tier. The sculpting brings out his dignified demeanor, perfectly representing his role as a wise and guiding figure in the series. Collectors who display these alongside mid-range scale figures report they hold their own visually. That is the honest benchmark.

Mistake #2: Ignoring the Film’s Cultural and Commercial Weight

Collectors who buy figures without understanding the IP context make expensive mistakes. So understand this clearly: Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe is not a minor theatrical footnote. The movie attracted over 2 million viewers, grossed 3.21 billion yen, and received the Excellent Animated Film Award at the 47th Japanese Academy Awards. That commercial and critical performance matters directly to figure value. Films with that cultural gravity tend to generate sustained demand for associated merchandise, not a six-month spike followed by a collapse.

Kitaro Birth: The Mystery of Gegege is a 2023 animated movie and an installment in the GeGeGe no Kitarō franchise set in continuity with its 2018 series, produced by Toei Animation and released on November 27, 2023. Beyond that, the franchise roots run extraordinarily deep. Manga legend Shigeru Mizuki (1922–2015) created the iconic GeGeGe no Kitaro, blending Japanese folklore with ghost and monster tales. Furthermore, the film was created as part of the 100th year Birth Anniversary project for Shigeru Mizuki. That anniversary context gives this merchandise a commemorative quality that purely entertainment-driven releases lack.

Why Kitaro’s Father Specifically?

In the film, Kitaro’s Father serves as the true protagonist before his death and spectral rebirth. The figure presents Kitaro’s Father in his human form from the movie The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe, which makes it rare: most Kitaro merchandise depicts his iconic eyeball ghost form, not the fully human character whose tragedy drives the entire film’s emotional engine. Consequently, this human-form figure occupies a more exclusive production niche. For the anime figure collector who tracks release diversity, that distinction matters.

Mistake #3: Skipping the Companion Mizuki Figure and Breaking the Set

The Kitaro’s Father Noodle Stopper exists within a direct companion set. Buying only one half is a collector error you will regret on display day. The Mizuki figure, representing the human journalist whose perspective frames the film’s events, completes the narrative diorama. The Mizuki Noodle Stopper Figure from the same Birth of Kitaro: Mystery of Gegegege movie line measures approximately 3.9 inches (10 cm). Set both figures on a shared shelf and you reconstruct the film’s central human relationship in miniature.

Explore the full collection

Figures, art toys & limited editions, shipped across Europe from France.

Shop now →

Rare Inventory stocks the Mizuki figure at the same €45 price point. The GeGeGe no Kitaro line is not immune, especially as the film’s overseas profile grows. FuRyu figures carry specific authenticity markers every buyer must check before purchasing.

Feature

Authentic FuRyu

Bootleg / Fake

Box printing

Sharp, consistent ink, Japanese text crisp

Blurry fonts, color bleeding

Paint seams

Clean transitions, no overflow

Visible overflow at color boundaries

Base markings

FuRyu logo and copyright molded in

Absent, incorrect, or shallow impression

PVC texture

Smooth, slight matte finish on skin

Glossy or sticky surface

Hair detail

Individually defined strands with shading

Flat, undifferentiated mass

First, always check the base. FuRyu molds the copyright text and brand logo directly into the plastic underside of every legitimate release. Second, examine the hair: authentic pieces show layered shading applied over a base coat, not a single flat color wash. Most importantly, purchase from verified sources only. The secondary market contains a significant volume of fakes for popular Japanese figure lines, and prize figures are particularly targeted because buyers assume lower scrutiny at lower prices.

Mistake #5: Misjudging the Secondary Market Trajectory

Collectors frequently assume prize figures have no secondary market upside. That assumption collapses when the film behind the figure achieves genuine cultural permanence. Consider the trajectory here: the Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe film grossed a total of 2.79 billion yen and continues generating franchise activity. Moreover, it competed for Best Animated Movie at the 47th Japan Academy Award, taking home an Excellence Award. Films that achieve this level of institutional recognition do not disappear from collective memory. Instead, their merchandise enters a slow appreciation cycle, particularly for pieces depicting characters in non-standard forms.

The human-form Kitaro’s Father figure occupies exactly that position. Even within Japanese collector communities, human-form figures from predominantly supernatural franchises command a premium over their standard supernatural counterparts. Beyond that, the Noodle Stopper format’s display versatility keeps these pieces in active use rather than boxed in storage, which sustains visibility and demand across collector generations. At €45, the entry cost sits low enough that even modest secondary market movement delivers meaningful percentage returns for early buyers.

Explore the full collection

Figures, art toys & limited editions, shipped across Europe from France.

Shop now →

Collector Value Comparison

Factor

Kitaro’s Father Noodle Stopper

Typical Prize Figure (Generic IP)

IP cultural depth

60+ years, national icon

Varies, often 5-10 years

Character form rarity

High (human form, not standard eyeball)

Low to medium

Film commercial success

3.21 billion yen, Academy Award winner

N/A or limited

Entry price

€45

€20-60

Display format versatility

High (perching, shelf, desk)

Low (upright only)

Rare Inventory Recommends

Buy the Kitaro’s Father Noodle Stopper and the Mizuki Noodle Stopper together. The set price at €90 total gives you a complete narrative display at a price point that any anime figure collector can justify. Rare Inventory ships both from France with delivery across Europe. Both pieces are in stock now, and prize figure availability for niche titles moves quickly once Western collector awareness catches up to Japanese market interest. Next, inspect the paint: legitimate figures show clean seam lines, layered shading, and a controlled matte finish on skin tones. Bootlegs typically display color overflow at boundaries, glossy or sticky PVC texture, and blurry printed text on the box. Always buy from verified retailers rather than anonymous secondary market listings to eliminate bootleg risk entirely.

Where can I find authentic anime figures if I live outside Japan?

Your best option as a non-Japanese buyer is a specialist retailer that sources directly from Japan and verifies authenticity before shipping. Rare Inventory operates from France and ships across Europe, stocking verified FuRyu pieces including the Birth of Kitaro Noodle Stopper line. Additionally, official brand sites like Good Smile Company and Kotobukiya sell directly to international buyers for their own product lines. For prize figures from FuRyu specifically, a trusted specialist retailer remains the safest route.

Is collecting anime figures a legitimate hobby or investment?

Collecting anime figures is one of the most established collector hobbies in the world, with a particularly deep market infrastructure in Japan and rapidly growing Western communities. As an investment, prize figures from culturally significant IPs, especially those tied to award-winning films, show a documented pattern of appreciation on the secondary market over five to ten year periods. Treat it first as a passion hobby and second as a speculative asset, and you will make far better buying decisions.

What makes the Birth of Kitaro FuRyu figures worth buying over other prize figures?

Three factors separate this line from generic prize figures: the IP depth of a 60-plus year national franchise, the film’s blockbuster commercial performance (3.21 billion yen box office), and the human-form character design that makes this version of Kitaro’s Father unusually rare within the franchise’s merchandise history. Most importantly, FuRyu’s Noodle Stopper format delivers genuine display versatility at a price point, €45, that keeps the barrier to entry low for any serious anime figure collector building a quality collection.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"How do I spot a fake or bootleg anime figure?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Check the base first: authentic FuRyu figures carry a molded copyright mark and brand logo on the underside.
