Last May, at the Porte de Vanves flea market in Paris, a dealer pulled a sealed card deck from a shoebox and asked for 60 euros. The box carried a flower with a smiling face. Two collectors reached for it at the same moment. However, neither of them knew what they were holding: a 2022 Takashi Murakami UNO deck that sold for roughly 25 euros at launch. The dealer got his price in under a minute. That scene explains why a uno anniversary edition conversation now happens at art fairs, not just toy shops. UNO turns 55 in 2026, and the myths around its collector decks are multiplying faster than the decks themselves. Below, five of those myths meet the facts.

No official UNO 55th anniversary edition has surfaced from Mattel for 2026, so the UNO anniversary edition collectors actually chase remains the 2021 Premium 50th Anniversary deck with its commemorative coin, alongside artist and licensed decks like the Murakami Artiste Series. In short, the anniversary year matters more as a buying window than as a product. Meanwhile, four collector decks are in stock in Europe right now, and this guide separates what is true about them from what collectors repeat.

Myth 1: “Mattel released a UNO anniversary edition for the 55th birthday”

Collectors keep asking shops for the 55th deck. However, the facts are simpler. Mattel has not announced a dedicated UNO 55th anniversary edition for 2026 at the time of writing. Instead, the brand’s milestone deck remains the Premium 50th Anniversary Edition from 2021. That deck shipped with 112 cards and a golden commemorative coin, and Mattel also reissued its very first Deluxe Edition for the same birthday.

What Mattel Creations actually shipped in 2026

The 2026 drops on Mattel Creations tell the real story. For example, the year brought a UNO Fandom deck for Ken’s 65th birthday, a Platinum Edition and a Masters of the Universe deck. None of them carry a UNO anniversary badge. Therefore, if a seller offers you a “55th anniversary UNO” today, ask for the Mattel product code. Consequently, the smart move for the anniversary year is to secure the collector decks that already exist, because the birthday itself has no official product yet.

Myth 2: “UNO was always a Mattel game”

This one is wrong by 21 years. In fact, a barber named Merle Robbins created UNO in 1971 in Reading, Ohio, after an argument with his son over Crazy Eights rules. Robbins spent about 8,000 dollars to print the first 5,000 decks. Then he sold them from his own barbershop. In 1972, he sold the rights to a group led by Robert Tezak for 50,000 dollars plus a royalty of 10 cents per game. That group became International Games Inc.

The date that changed the collector market

Mattel bought International Games on 23 January 1992. As a result, every artist, licensed and anniversary deck collectors fight over today comes from the Mattel era. Still, the pre-1992 International Games decks are the ones European flea market hunters should learn to recognise, because they predate the modern logo entirely. Above all, the 1971 date is why 2026 counts as the 55th year.

Myth 3: “The Murakami UNO is just a normal deck with a famous name on it”

Wrong, and the box proves it. Takashi Murakami designed the fifth deck in the Artiste Series, which Mattel started in 2019 with Jean-Michel Basquiat, then continued with Keith Haring, Shepard Fairey and Nina Chanel Abney. The Murakami deck launched in August 2022 through Mattel Creations at 25 dollars, with a purchase limit per customer. Moreover, Japan received its own retail release on 27 August 2022 at 3,300 yen.
