Takashi Murakami keeps blurring the line between fine art and everyday objects. His latest trading card release proves the point once again. The Jellyfish Eyes Trading Card Box, officially titled F.R.I.E.N.D. Battle α, arrived in late 2024. Since then, it has become one of the most talked-about art collectibles in the TCG world.

This box is not just another card product. Instead, it works as a sealed art object, a playable game, and a piece of Murakami history all at once. Because of that mix, it appeals to two very different audiences. Art collectors chase it for the signature Superflat visuals. Card game fans chase it for the fresh, unpredictable mechanic inside.

Below, we break down everything worth knowing about this release. First, we look at the game itself. Then, we explore the film and the artist behind it. Finally, we explain why this box deserves a place in your collection.

What Is the Jellyfish Eyes Trading Card Game?

The Jellyfish Eyes Trading Card Game launched in October 2024. Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., Takashi Murakami’s own studio, produced it. The game draws its entire universe from Murakami’s 2013 film, Jellyfish Eyes.

Each box holds 30 sealed packs. Every pack contains 5 cards. As a result, one box delivers 150 cards in total, all printed in the original Japanese edition.

Murakami designed the cards to feel like standalone artworks. Bold colors, playful characters, and psychedelic details fill every illustration. Moreover, some cards carry rare holographic finishes, which collectors prize the most. Kaikai Kiki also protects the rarest pulls inside a plastic case with a dedicated card sheet.

The release marks a notable moment for Murakami fans. Until now, his trading card projects mostly focused on pure art sets. This one goes further, because it adds a full competitive game system. Therefore, it stands apart from his other card releases.

Who Is Takashi Murakami?

Takashi Murakami ranks among the most influential contemporary artists of his generation. Born in Tokyo in 1962, he founded the Superflat movement. This aesthetic dissolves the boundary between fine art and pop culture. Specifically, it pulls from anime, manga, traditional Japanese painting, and global consumer culture at once.

The Story Behind Jellyfish Eyes

Jellyfish Eyes, known in Japanese as Mememe no Kurage, marked Murakami’s directorial debut. The film premiered in Japan in April 2013. Notably, it remains the only feature-length movie he has directed himself.

The story follows a young boy named Masashi Kusakabe. He moves to a quiet countryside town with his mother after his father dies. That loss ties directly to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear disaster. As a result, the film carries a clear emotional and environmental weight beneath its playful surface.

Soon after arriving, Masashi meets a small pink creature. He names it Kurage-bo, which means Jellyfish Boy. Then he discovers that every child in town owns a similar creature. These beings are called F.R.I.E.N.D.s. The acronym stands for Life-Form Resonance Inner Energy Negative Emotion and Disaster Prevention.

The children control their F.R.I.E.N.D.s through smartphone-like devices. At first, the creatures feel like magical pets. However, a group of scientists called the Black-Cloaked Four has darker plans. They engineer the F.R.I.E.N.D.s to harvest the children’s negative emotions and convert them into a dangerous energy source. Eventually, Masashi and his classmates unite to stop the scheme.

Murakami built this world with obsessive care. In fact, he designed over 100 unique creatures in just a few months. He also brought in horror director Yoshihiro Nishimura as co-writer, editor, and producer. Because Murakami funded the film through Kaikai Kiki, he kept total creative control from start to finish.

From Film to Cult Collectible

Jellyfish Eyes divided critics on its release. Still, its cultural footprint kept growing over the years. The Criterion Collection released the film on DVD and Blu-ray in North America. In addition, it toured multiple American art museums, from Los Angeles to Chicago.

That trajectory matters for collectors. A niche art film with a Criterion release holds real cultural weight. Therefore, any official product tied to that universe gains extra meaning. The F.R.I.E.N.D. Battle α box sits right at the center of this story.

The card game revives the film’s imagery for a new audience. As a result, it works as both a fresh product and a piece of Murakami history. Fans who love the movie finally get an interactive way to enter its world.

A New Battle Mechanic Built on “Negative Energy”

Most card games reward the player who deals the most damage. F.R.I.E.N.D. Battle α flips that logic. The game introduces a mechanic based on the film’s idea of “negative energy.”

Here is how it works. A player on the edge of defeat can suddenly trigger a comeback. As a result, no match feels decided until the final move. This twist keeps every game tense and unpredictable. Because of this design, even a losing position can turn into a win.

For collectors, the mechanic adds another layer of meaning. The gameplay directly mirrors the emotional themes of the film. In the movie, negative emotion fuels the villains’ plan. In the game, near-defeat fuels a dramatic recovery. The concept and the cards tell one connected story.

This thematic link sets the game apart from standard TCGs. Many card games borrow art without borrowing meaning. This one does the opposite. Consequently, it feels like an extension of Murakami’s vision rather than a simple licensing exercise.

Murakami’s Signature Style on Every Card

The Jellyfish Eyes cards showcase the Superflat style fully. Vibrant characters, smiling motifs, and surreal creatures cover the full set. Each design uses flat planes, bold outlines, and saturated color. Consequently, every card reads as a miniature Murakami piece rather than a plain game component.

The creature designs give the set its personality. Kurage-bo and the other F.R.I.E.N.D.s appear in playful, otherworldly forms. Some look cute and rounded. Others look strange and slightly unsettling. This range reflects the film’s balance between charm and menace.

The print quality raises the appeal even higher. Holographic finishes catch the light on the rarest cards. In addition, the layout treats each illustration like framed artwork. For fans of designer collectibles, this attention to detail carries real value.
