Back in September 2013, Konami split the Forbidden and Limited lists for Japan and the West for good. However, most of us in Europe shrugged and kept buying Japanese boxes anyway. That decision shaped the entire Yu-Gi-Oh OCG Europe scene: two games, two card pools, one confused continent of collectors. Thirteen years later, I have made nearly every mistake that split made possible. For example, I once carried a Japanese Extra Deck to a regional and learned the rules the hard way. Below are the five errors that cost me the most money, and exactly how to dodge them.

Yu-Gi-Oh OCG products are not legal at any European tournament, yet they remain the best way for European collectors to own Japanese-exclusive sets and Konami prize figures. In fact, Konami’s European rules bar every Japanese, Korean and Chinese card from sanctioned play. Still, boxes like Selection 10 and Animation Chronicle 2021 hold cards and art that never reached the West in that form.

Mistake 1. Bringing OCG Cards to a European Qualifier

First, the embarrassing one. The 2026 European World Championship Qualifier ran at Brussels Expo from 10 to 12 July 2026, alongside the European Genesys Championship. Moreover, the winners earned a seat at the World Championship in Ariake, Japan, from 28 to 30 August. Several players travelled to Brussels with Japanese copies of staple cards. As a result, judges sent them to the vendor hall to buy English replacements before round one.

Why it happens

Japanese prints are often cheaper, and they frequently release months before the TCG version. Because of this, European players convince themselves that a card with the same name and the same effect must count. It does not. Konami’s European card legality page states that cards printed in Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Asian English can only be played in Asian territories. In contrast, TCG cards in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese are legal in any TCG territory. A translation sheet changes nothing, and neither does owning the TCG counterpart at home.

How to avoid it

Keep two separate binders and never let them touch. Additionally, treat every Japanese box as a collection purchase, not a deck purchase. The table below is the one I wish someone had handed me in 2013.

Mistake 2. Writing Off Yu-Gi-Oh OCG Europe Boxes as Unplayable Junk

Next comes the opposite error. After my Brussels lesson, I ignored Japanese product for years. Consequently, I missed two of the most collector-friendly boxes the Yu-Gi-Oh OCG Europe market has seen this decade, while they sat at retail prices.

Selection 10 is a reprint set with teeth

Konami released Selection 10, set code SLT1, in Japan on 5 December 2020. Each box holds 15 packs of 5 cards. The set mixes 35 new cards with 15 reprints, spread across 5 Ultra Rares, 8 Super Rares, 12 Rares and 25 Commons. Beyond that, 10 of those Commons also appear as Normal Parallel Rares, which is the detail most buyers overlook. The cover card is Vampire Voivode, and the box introduced the Starry Knight, Sunavalon and Sunvine archetypes to the OCG. It also supports Galaxy-Eyes, Hieratic, Nekroz, Shaddoll and Time Thief players. The Selection 10 box in Japanese sits at €20 at Rare Inventory, which is less than many single Ultra Rares from it.
