The Takashi Murakami x Hikaru x Smart Magazine Flower Cushion 30cm in Black & Yellow currently sits at €35 at Rare Inventory — a price that makes no sense for a Japan-exclusive, limited-edition magazine appendix from one of the most institutionally validated artists alive. That gap between market ignorance and actual collectible merit is exactly why serious collectors should move now.

Most Murakami collectors chase the obvious targets: PSA-graded Takashi Murakami cards, vintage Louis Vuitton monogram canvas, the large-format Kaikai Kiki plush drops. Meanwhile, this cushion sits quietly undervalued. That is a mistake. This piece released with the Smart Magazine Japan November 2020 issue, pairing Takashi Murakami with YouTuber Hikaru, as a 30cm limited edition flower cushion appendix. Japan-only magazine appendix drops do not restock. When they surface outside Japan, the window closes fast.

Who Is Behind the Takashi Murakami x Hikaru Smart Magazine Flower Cushion?

Takashi Murakami proposed the theory of Superflat, which reimagines the origins of traditional Japanese painting and contemporary art through the visual logic of anime and manga. Murakami created original characters such as the Flower, DOB, and Kaikai Kiki — unprecedented in the history of contemporary art — while expanding the concept of contemporary art through collaborations with fashion brands and musicians. Most importantly, his institutional standing only accelerates. In 2026, Asia Society honored contemporary art icon Takashi Murakami as the Art Game Changer at the Asia Game Changer Awards SoCal, with the award introduced by Michael Govan, CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director of LACMA.

That level of institutional recognition matters directly to collectible valuation. Collectors who track the Murakami market understand that every major career milestone, every museum retrospective, every award, pulls secondary prices upward across his entire catalogue. Consequently, owning any authenticated Murakami piece below market becomes a stronger position with each passing year.

Hikaru: Why the Collaborator Matters

This cushion represents a special collaboration with Takashi Murakami and Hikaru, a famous Japanese YouTuber. Hikaru is one of the most popular YouTubers in Japan. For Western collectors, that name may not ring bells immediately. For the Japanese market, however, a Murakami x Hikaru co-sign on a physical product carries real cultural weight. Smart Magazine Japan chose this pairing for its November 2020 cover, which means both names appear on the cover artwork itself. The appendix flower cushion featured as the cover gift of the November 2020 issue, with both Takashi Murakami and Hikaru appearing on the cover together. That dual-cover legitimacy is not common for magazine appendix collectibles.

Design Breakdown: The Black & Yellow Flower Cushion 30cm

The colorway is deliberate, not arbitrary. The cushion runs half black and half yellow, a palette directly tied to Hikaru’s personal visual identity. Murakami’s iconic smiling flower face anchors the front. The 30cm diameter hits the sweet spot for display — large enough to read across a shelf, compact enough for a glass case or framed presentation.
