Superhero Figures Worth Collecting in 2026: A Collector’s Guide
2026 is not an ordinary year for superhero collectibles. Two of the biggest theatrical events in a decade land inside the same twelve months, and one of the most productive licensing eras in modern action figure history is scheduled to end in December. For collectors, that combination creates something rare: a set of shelves whose contents are, in a very literal sense, about to become finite.
This guide breaks down what is genuinely worth collecting this year, why, and how to buy it without wrecking your margin on shipping and duties.
Why 2026 matters more than the average year
Three forces are shaping the market right now.
The theatrical engine is running hot again. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened on July 31 and became the highest grossing Spider-Man film ever, crossing 2 billion dollars worldwide. Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, bringing the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and a new X-Men cast together against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, with presales tracking roughly 65 percent ahead of the Spider-Man pace. When a film performs at that level, character demand does not stay inside the cinema. It moves straight into figure pre-orders, and it moves fastest for characters who had no definitive figure before.
The DC collector license is changing hands. McFarlane Toys holds the DC adult collector license through the end of 2026. From 2027, Mattel takes over the collector segment. That means every DC Multiverse 7-inch (18 cm) figure released this year is part of a closed set with a known end date. Closed sets behave differently from open ones. Molds do not get re-run under a new licensee, and the deep cuts that never got a second production run are exactly the pieces that quietly climb three or four years later.
Premium and mass market have separated. The 6-inch (15 cm) mass retail tier, the 7-inch (18 cm) collector tier, the Japanese import tier and the 1/6 scale tier now serve different buyers with different resale behaviour. Knowing which tier you are buying into matters more than knowing which character you like.

The four tiers, and what each one is actually good for
Tier 1: Marvel Legends, roughly 28 to 56 dollars
Hasbro’s 6-inch (15 cm) line is the backbone of the hobby. It is affordable, widely distributed, and produced in volume, which means most of it will never appreciate. The exceptions are consistent and easy to identify:
- Channel exclusives. Fan channel and Amazon exclusives are produced in smaller runs and disappear from retail permanently. The 2026 Marvel Legends x Magic: The Gathering wave is the clearest current example, with Doom 2099, Captain America (Twilight), an Amazon exclusive Black Panther and a fan channel exclusive Malice. The first Magic wave drew complaints about pricing and still sold out on pre-order almost immediately.
- Long-requested characters. Figures fans have asked for over multiple years absorb demand instantly. Professor Hulk (46.99 dollars) and the X-Men ’97 Beast fall into this group, though Beast’s divisive sculpt is a reminder that anticipation and reception are not the same thing.
- Film wave firsts. The first Marvel Legends figures for Avengers: Doomsday, revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, are the first plastic versions of designs an enormous audience is about to see in December.
Treat the rest of the line as display product you buy because you want it, not as inventory.
Tier 2: McFarlane DC Multiverse, roughly 27 to 50 dollars
This is the highest conviction category of the year, purely because of the calendar. The line runs at 7-inch (18 cm) scale with up to 22 points of articulation, art cards and character specific accessories, and it ends in December.
The Supergirl (2026) theatrical wave is the practical entry point: the standard Supergirl figure at 26.99 dollars, the Deluxe Theatrical Edition with puppy Krypto at 34.99, Lobo and Krem of the Yellow Hills at 34.99 each, and Lobo’s Space Hog as a 49.99 dollar deluxe set. Gold Label and retailer exclusive variants (including the Walmart coat version) are the ones to prioritise, because Gold Label runs are smaller and the branding is specific to this licensing era.
The broader rule for the rest of 2026: buy the deep cuts, the Build-A-Figure waves and the exclusives, not the fifteenth Batman variant. When Mattel restarts the collector line in 2027, the market will re-anchor on new tooling, and the McFarlane era will be judged on what it did that nobody else will do again.
Tier 3: Japanese imports, roughly 70 to 130 dollars
This is where Rare Inventory lives, and it is the tier most European and Latin American collectors underuse.
MAFEX (Medicom Toy) sits at the meticulous end: tight sculpts, soft goods, and a heavy focus on Western licenses, typically 70 to 120 dollars with six to eighteen months between announcement and shipping. Comic-accurate MAFEX releases hold value better than film tie-ins because the source material does not date. The upcoming arcade-era Venom, priced around 100 dollars, is a good example of the niche-design releases that quietly become hard to find.
S.H.Figuarts (Tamashii Nations, Bandai) is the more expressive line, with wider character coverage and strong articulation engineering. Sentinel’s Fighting Armor line is a smaller, stranger, more collectible proposition still: heavily armoured die-cast reinterpretations, most recently Captain Marvel at 6.5 inches (17 cm).
Two structural advantages here. Japanese runs are smaller than Hasbro’s by an order of magnitude, and Japanese domestic pricing plus a favourable yen often lands imported figures below Western retail even after freight. Two structural risks: long pre-order horizons tie up cash, and cancellations happen.
Tier 4: 1/6 scale, roughly 300 dollars and up
Hot Toys and Sideshow are the collector-grade end. Hot Toys released 88 figures in 2026, and its Avengers: Doomsday reveals (Doctor Doom, Magneto, Cyclops, Gambit) are the pieces most likely to be discussed for years. Sideshow has added Doomsday figures plus a Hulk from Brand New Day.
At this level, a single figure equals ten Marvel Legends. Buy one piece you will keep, in the character you actually care about, and buy it on pre-order at retail. Secondary market entry on a sold-out Hot Toys release is where collectors get hurt.
A simple framework for deciding
Before you place any pre-order, run five checks.
- Is the license window closing? A closing window converts an ordinary figure into a finite one. This is the single strongest signal available in 2026.
- How is it distributed? Mass retail is replaceable. Exclusives, Gold Label and Japanese-only releases are not.
- Is this the first definitive version of the character? First-ever figures of a character absorb demand from every future fan. The fifth variant absorbs almost none.
- Will the character survive the film cycle? Doctor Doom, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Batman have decades of demand behind them. A single-film supporting character usually does not.
- Can you keep it mint? In this category, packaging is a meaningful share of the value. Sun damage, shelf wear and creased blisters take a figure out of the collector market entirely.
What to skip
Repainted variants of characters already saturated at retail. Movie-accurate figures for films that underperform, which get discounted within months. Anything you are buying purely because a reseller told you it was heating up on social media. And, generally, anything you would not be happy to keep for five years, because that is roughly the horizon on which closed-license lines actually re-rate.
Storage and condition, briefly
Keep boxes out of direct light. Store carded figures upright, never stacked, and use a protective case for anything that carries Gold Label, exclusive or convention branding. For loose display pieces, watch for joint stress on soft plastic and for cape discolouration on soft-goods figures, which is the most common preventable loss of value in the 7-inch (18 cm) and 1/6 tiers.

The 2026 shortlist
If you want a short answer:
- For value retention: McFarlane DC Multiverse Gold Label and exclusive releases, bought before December.
- For upside on demand: first-release Avengers: Doomsday figures across Marvel Legends and Hot Toys, especially Doctor Doom.
- For quality per dollar: comic-accurate MAFEX, imported and consolidated.
- For pure collecting joy: the figure of the character you have wanted since you were twelve. That one always holds its value to you, which is the only return that is guaranteed.

Superhero figures: frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Which tier should a new collector start with?
Marvel Legends is the affordable, widely distributed backbone of the hobby and the easiest place to learn what you like. If sculpt quality per euro matters more to you than quantity, the Japanese import tier (MAFEX, S.H.Figuarts) is where collections get serious.
Are Japanese import figures official?
Yes. MAFEX is produced by Medicom Toy and S.H.Figuarts by Tamashii Nations under Bandai, both fully licensed. Their smaller production runs are exactly why sealed examples become hard to find once a wave sells through.
Does packaging really matter that much?
In this category, yes. Packaging is a meaningful share of a figure’s value, so keep boxes out of direct light, store carded figures upright and never stacked, and treat inserts as part of the collectible.
