Living Dead Dolls: The Complete Collector’s Guide (2026)
Not every collectible earns cult status. Most fade. A rare few grow into something bigger than the product itself, a subculture, a community, a legitimate corner of dark art history. Living Dead Dolls belong to that rare category. Since 1998, this horror doll line by Mezco Toyz has built one of the most devoted collector communities in the world. If you want to understand why, this guide covers everything: the origin story, the design details that define the line, and the specific pieces worth owning right now.
Living Dead Dolls are a horror doll line created by Ed Long and Damien Glonek in 1998 and produced by Mezco Toyz since 2000. Each doll stands ten inches tall and ships in a coffin-shaped box with a death certificate, released in numbered series that Mezco does not reprint. The line is officially recognised as the world’s longest continually running series of collectible horror dolls.
Where It All Started: New Jersey, 1998
Living Dead Dolls began with two friends in New Jersey late one night in 1998. Their names were Ed Long and Damien Glonek. Together, they created something the doll market and the horror collectibles world had never seen before.
Long and Glonek made their debut at Chiller Theatre, a popular horror memorabilia convention in New York City. Both creators grew up on horror films, the Saturday afternoon creature double-feature kind. Naturally, their dolls reflected exactly that upbringing: macabre, theatrical, and laced with dark humor.
The original handmade pieces sold exclusively through Glonek’s mail order company, Unearthly Possessions, and at horror conventions along the East Coast. Then, at one of those conventions, everything changed. The founder of Mezco Toyz noticed the dolls and later offered Long and Glonek a manufacturing contract to distribute them commercially.

The Commercial Launch That Changed Everything
Series 1 launched in early 2000 in the United States with a production run of 40,000 sets, followed by a second edition released in Japan. The response was immediate. Horror fans and doll collectors rushed to buy the first wave of characters. Sadie became the very first Living Dead Doll ever created, originally retailing for $24 (about €21).
From that point forward, the line never stopped growing. Living Dead Dolls now hold official recognition as the world’s longest continually running series of collectible horror-themed dolls. That record alone says everything about what this line means to the collecting world.
For a closer look at those first releases, our guide to Living Dead Dolls Series 1 and 3 covers the figures that started it all and what they trade for today.
What Makes a Living Dead Doll
Every detail in a Living Dead Doll serves a purpose. Understanding those details helps collectors identify quality and spot what makes certain editions more valuable than others.
Each doll stands ten inches tall, wears fabric clothing, and ships in a coffin-shaped box with a death certificate. Every character carries a different cause of death, described in verse on the certificate. That combination of dark poetry, theatrical packaging, and individual backstory lifts these pieces far above standard figures.
Each doll also features real cloth clothing, glass-like eyes, and five points of articulation. More recent entries push this further. Nevertheless, the core identity, coffin box, death certificate, horror aesthetic, stays completely consistent across the entire line. That consistency is a big reason collectors trust it.
Original Characters vs. Licensed Collaborations
One of the most important distinctions in the Living Dead Dolls catalog separates original characters from licensed IP collaborations.
The original character line spans dozens of series, each containing five dolls. Some characters reference real historical figures, among them Lizzie Borden, Elizabeth Bathory, and Jack the Ripper. Others exist entirely within the Living Dead Dolls universe. Together, they build a mythology collectors follow across decades.
The LDD Presents sub-line takes a different approach. Here, Mezco applies the Living Dead Dolls treatment to licensed characters from horror and pop culture. The roster includes iconic figures from The Lost Boys, Nosferatu, The Crow, Chucky and Tiffany, and many more. Each arrives with the same coffin packaging and dark aesthetic, while carrying the visual identity of its source material.
Both lines offer serious collector value. Original series dolls grow scarcer over time. Licensed collaborations, moreover, attract fans of both the IP and the LDD brand simultaneously.
Why Collectors Take This Line Seriously
Living Dead Dolls occupy a specific and defensible position in the collectibles market. Three factors explain why the line continues to grow in value.
First, the production model. Each series ships in limited quantities. Once a series sells through, Mezco doesn’t reprint it. Early series dolls in sealed coffin-box condition therefore command significant premiums today.
Second, design consistency. In stark contrast to other doll companies, Living Dead Dolls stay true to their origins, with each doll designed by one of the original creators: Ed Long, Damien Glonek, and Michael “Mez” Markowitz. That continuity matters. Collectors trust this line because the vision hasn’t changed hands.
Third, scope without dilution. The line has spawned a board game, glassware, school supplies, plush toys, vinyl mini-figures, and licensed Halloween costumes. Despite all of that, the core doll line remains the heart of the franchise, and the heart of the collector market.

How to Buy Living Dead Dolls the Right Way
Collectors who want genuine value from this line follow a few clear principles.
Buy sealed. An opened Living Dead Doll loses its death certificate, its coffin box condition, and a significant portion of its secondary market value. Sealed condition is non-negotiable for serious collecting.
Prioritize early series. Series 1 through Series 5 represent the founding era of the line. These pieces are genuinely harder to find than later releases. Additionally, they carry the historical significance of the line’s first decade.

Verify authenticity. Living Dead Dolls attract fakes and mislabeled reproductions on secondary markets. Buying through a trusted source, one that stocks original, sealed merchandise, removes that risk entirely.

Living Dead Dolls: frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What are the rarest Living Dead Dolls?
Early series and low-run exclusives from Mezco Toyz are the hardest to find, and sealed Series 1 dolls are the classic grails. Variants and convention exclusives can be even scarcer than the main line.
Are sealed Living Dead Dolls worth more than opened ones?
Almost always. The coffin box and death certificate are part of each release, so a factory sealed doll commands a clear premium over a displayed one.
How should I store sealed Living Dead Dolls?
Keep them out of direct sunlight, in a dry room with a stable temperature. Sunlight fades the coffin box artwork, and humidity can damage both the packaging and the doll inside.
