How to spot a fake KAWS figure: the complete authentication guide
The KAWS figure market has a serious counterfeit problem. Around 50% of KAWS toys compared against verified originals turn out to be counterfeits. That number is not an exaggeration, it’s the experience of serious collectors who have spent years studying authentic pieces side by side with fakes. If you want to buy a KAWS figure with confidence, this guide covers every checkpoint that separates a genuine piece from a replica. Furthermore, it applies to all major KAWS releases, Companion, Dissected Companion, Dissected Milo, Together, BFF, and beyond.
Why fake KAWS figures are so common
KAWS figures are released in limited editions and sell out rapidly, which fuels a secondary market where counterfeits thrive. Counterfeiters target KAWS specifically because the demand consistently outpaces the supply. Moreover, advances in manufacturing have made high-quality replicas increasingly difficult to distinguish from originals at a glance.
The good news is that genuine KAWS figures maintain a level of craft that fakes consistently fail to replicate fully. KAWS spends a great deal of time perfecting every limited-edition design, production models go back and forth up to 10 times before he approves the quality. Consequently, the gap between an original and a counterfeit always exists. You just need to know where to look.
Step 1: Start with the box
Authentication begins before you even look at the figure. An authentic KAWS box will have a hologram label that changes color as you move it. That hologram is the first and most immediate authentication marker on any KAWS x Medicom Toy release.
Beyond the hologram, examine every element of the packaging. Check the box size, color, font size, and spacing everywhere on the packaging. Check the correct design on the front and inspect even the smallest details, a lazy counterfeiter may have overlooked exactly that one element.
Furthermore, authentic boxes use distinct clusters of dots to form each hole in the hologram, while fakes have blurred dots that make the holes appear solid or misshapen. That detail is invisible at normal viewing distance but immediately apparent under close inspection.
Step 2: Check the weight and feel
Pick up the figure. This single test eliminates a significant percentage of fakes immediately.
From the Companion to the Chum, all authentic KAWS figures feel solid and dense. If it’s hollow, it’s not a KAWS. Genuine pieces use high-quality cast vinyl that gives them a specific heft. Counterfeits almost universally use cheaper, lighter materials that feel noticeably different in hand.
While difficult to calibrate when buying online, in-person purchases are made easier by examining the weight and feel of the plastics. If you’re buying online, always request that the seller hold the figure and compare it to reference images before purchasing.
Step 3: Examine the paint quality
The paint on genuine KAWS figures is immaculate, applied evenly, with clean lines and precise edges, consistent color, and a uniformity that speaks to the meticulous production process. Counterfeit figures often have sloppy paintwork: uneven application, smudges, or misaligned colors.
Additionally, check if the finish should be matte or shiny for your specific figure, many fakes get this wrong. The finish is not a universal characteristic across all KAWS releases, so knowing what the authentic version of your specific figure should look like is essential before making any judgment.
Pay particular attention to the X eyes. On genuine pieces, the lines of KAWS’s trademark crossed-out eyes are sharply printed with minimal bleeding. Fake versions often have thicker lines with pronounced bleeding.
Step 4: Inspect the facial details
To tell if a KAWS figure is real or fake, check the facial details, particularly the lines that form the face. Fake figures often have inaccurately sized lines.
On a genuine KAWS figure, look for the following:
- Eyes: Bold and deeply set X marks with consistent line weight
- Nostrils: Noticeably deep and thick holes, not shallow or thin
- Glove symbol: Distinctly thick X logo
Counterfeit versions have thin and superficially set XX eyes, shallow and thinly formed nostrils, and a thin X logo on the gloves. These differences are subtle at a distance but clear under close inspection or in well-lit photographs.
Step 5: Read the foot stamp
Every authentic KAWS figure carries specific stamped text on the underside of the feet. For KAWS x Medicom Toy x OriginalFake releases, including the Dissected Milo, the stamp reads: © KAWS / © [year] NOWHERE Co., Ltd / Medicom Toy / [year] / China.
The engraving on real figures shows slightly warped alphabet outlines, especially noticeable in the letters “M” and “E.” Fakes display straighter outlines with sharp corners. Counterintuitively, overly sharp and clean engraving can actually be a red flag, genuine stamps have a specific character to their finish that high-quality fakes struggle to replicate exactly.
Check the font thickness carefully. Fake versions may have text with incorrect thickness, particularly visible in letters with multiple strokes like “M” and “W.”
Step 6: Verify the colorway exists
This step eliminates an entire category of fakes before you even examine the physical piece.
Learn what KAWS has actually released. Was a certain model ever produced in a particular colorway or with certain dimensions? Counterfeiters frequently produce figures in colorways that never existed, because buyers unfamiliar with the catalog can’t verify the claim.
Authentic KAWS figures exhibit consistent quality across colorways, dimensions, and design features. Every genuine release has documentation — official product listings, verified secondary market records, and collector community archives. If a colorway doesn’t appear in any of those sources, it probably doesn’t exist.
Step 7: Be skeptical of “factory errors” and suspiciously low prices
Be skeptical of any product marked “factory error.” KAWS spends a great deal of time perfecting every limited-edition design and would never release a less-than-flawless creation. Smudged, deformed, or misaligned details are highly unlikely on an authentic KAWS, “factory error” and “sample” are simply more appealing terms for “unauthorized copy.”
Equally, if the price seems too good to be true, it most likely is. With the limited production of many KAWS figures, authentic pieces won’t wind up on a sale rack or a garage sale. No one sells a $1,000 KAWS Dissected Milo for $50 unless something is wrong with the piece, or with the story behind it.
The Dissected Milo specifically: what to look for
The KAWS Dissected Milo 2011 is one of the most counterfeited KAWS x BAPE pieces in the secondary market. In addition to the general checks above, apply these specifically:
Edition verification: The Dissected Milo 2011 exists in three colorways: Black, Brown, and Grey, each limited to 500 units. Any other colorway is not authentic.
Foot stamp: Look for © KAWS..11 / © 2011 NOWHERE Co., Ltd / Medicom Toy / 2011 / China stamped clearly on the underside of both feet.
Box hologram: The original box carries a silver foil hologram on the back panel. This is the primary authentication marker for this specific release — examine it under changing light angles to verify the color shift.
Paint zones: The dissected interior and exterior color zones should have clean, precise boundaries. Paint bleeding between zones is a clear sign of a counterfeit.
At Rare Inventory, we carry both the Brown and White colorways of the Dissected Milo 2011 with original box and authentication hologram intact. Every piece we sell passes all the checks in this guide.
