What Are Prize Figures, and Why Are They Sold in Shops?
Prize figures are the most underestimated segment in anime collectibles, and serious collectors who ignore them are leaving real value on the table. Born inside Japan’s claw-machine arcades, these figures have crossed every border and now command genuine secondary-market attention worldwide. Understanding where they came from, who makes them, and how they differ from premium statues is the single most important knowledge gap a new collector needs to close.
Prize figures are anime-original static statues produced specifically as rewards for Japanese UFO catcher arcade machines, later sold through import retailers globally at prices typically between $20 (about €18) and $40 (about €36). Manufacturers like Banpresto design them for high-volume crane-machine distribution first, then release remaining stock through retail channels. That two-stage pipeline is exactly why prize figures exist in shops at all.

Round 1: Prize Figures vs. Scale Figures, Origins and Identity
Where Prize Figures Actually Come From
The real turning point for the entire prize-figure category came in 1985, when SEGA released its groundbreaking UFO Catcher claw machine. Walk into any arcade in Japan and rows of claw machines greet you, known as UFO Catchers because the claws resemble a flying saucer descending to abduct a prize. The machine carried the original internal codename Eagle Catcher during development, referencing the eagle-claw shape of the grabber. However, designing the claw to look like a bird proved difficult, and as the design evolved it came to resemble a UFO, which directly influenced the name change.
By 1994, the claw could be changed to fit the sizes and shapes of different prizes, and the machine had become a craze across Japan: arcades dedicated entire floors to UFO Catcher cabinets, of which Sega had sold over 40,000. Anime figures quickly became a favorite content category, with claw machines featuring figurines from popular series that attracted dedicated fans, and many prizes carried exclusive status not available anywhere else.

How Scale Figures Are Born Differently
Scale figures, in contrast, enter the world through direct pre-order campaigns. Good Smile Company, Kotobukiya, and Medicom Toy announce a figure, collect pre-orders over months, and manufacture to demand. No arcade machine is ever involved. The collector pays a premium (often $80 to $300+ (about €71–265+)) for a hand-painted, individually boxed statue with a numbered production run. Prize figures skip every one of those steps. Manufacturers produce them at volume, drop them into crane machines, and retailers absorb unsold stock. That structural difference explains every quality and pricing gap between the two formats.
Round 1 Verdict: Prize figures win on accessibility and origin story. Scale figures win on prestige. Neither replaces the other.
Round 2: Prize Figures vs. Scale Figures, Quality and Sub-Lines
What Prize Figure Quality Actually Looks Like in 2026
Banpresto releases new figures at an extremely high volume, covering franchises from Dragon Ball and One Piece to Demon Slayer, and runs multiple named sub-lines including Grandista, MAXIMATIC, and Ichibansho, each with different sculpt styles, scales, and price points. Grandista figures tend to run larger and more premium within the prize-figure tier, while other sub-lines prioritize faster turnaround and lower cost. For instance, Banpresto’s Q Posket line produces stylized chibi figures with oversized heads, now released across dozens of franchises. September 2026 saw Banpresto reveal Q Posket Stranger Things figures covering Dustin, Steve, and Robin simultaneously, showing just how fast the format now adapts to global pop culture.
For a current example of the Grandista treatment on a recent series, see our Kaiju No. 8 statues guide.
Additionally, Banpresto’s KUJI PREMIUM tier, also announced in September 2026, delivers colossal One Piece figures with premium paint finishes that genuinely blur the line between prize and scale quality. Moreover, the newly revealed Shaman King Yoh Asakura prize figure demonstrates how precisely sculptors now capture a character’s personality even within prize-format constraints. Prize figures today are not the chalky, awkwardly proportioned objects of 2005.
Where Scale Figures Still Dominate
Scale figures maintain a clear lead in paint mastery and articulation. Good Smile’s Nendoroid line and Kotobukiya’s Bishoujo series apply hand-finishing techniques that no high-volume production run can replicate consistently. Reading reviews or watching unboxing videos of a specific Banpresto sub-line before buying helps set realistic quality expectations, since photos alone don’t always capture paint application consistency. That variability is the honest trade-off: prize figures offer volume and speed, scale figures offer precision.
Round 2 Verdict: Scale figures still lead on paint and finish. Prize figures close the gap faster every year. For the price difference, prize figures now deliver exceptional value.

Round 2: Prize Figures vs. Ichiban Kuji, The Format Battle
How Ichiban Kuji Lottery Works
Ichiban Kuji and Banpresto both come out of Japan’s prize collectible culture, but they operate on genuinely different systems: Ichiban Kuji is a lottery format where every ticket wins something, while Banpresto is a manufacturer producing figures distributed through arcade cranes and retail prize channels. A full Kuji set includes a Last One prize awarded to whoever draws the final ticket, often the most coveted item in the entire pool. That lottery mechanic creates scarcity psychology and dramatically inflates secondary-market prices for A-rank and Last One prizes. Collectors who want a specific Kuji figure without gambling must pay a steep premium on the secondary market.
Standard Prize Figures: Predictable and Purchasable
Banpresto figures distribute through arcade crane games and retail prize channels rather than a lottery ticket system, so winning or purchasing a specific figure depends on arcade crane skill or retail availability, not a guaranteed-prize ticket structure. For collectors outside Japan, that retail availability is the entire point. Companies that run their own arcades sometimes release figures available only by playing there, but exclusive figures also appear at third-party arcades like Round 1 and GiGO. Most prize figures, however, flow into import retail within weeks of their arcade debut. Originally designed as prizes for Japanese arcade crane games, Banpresto figures have since become a retail-available collecting category in their own right, sold through import retailers alongside traditional premium figure lines.
Round 3 Verdict: Ichiban Kuji creates rarer, higher-ceiling collectibles. Standard prize figures offer immediate, reliable access at lower cost. Pick your risk profile accordingly.

Who Makes Prize Figures and Why It Matters for Anime Figures Original Authenticity
As of 2026, the Japanese toy industry fields several dedicated prize-figure manufacturers including Sega Fave, FuRyu, and Banpresto for arcade prizes, alongside giants Bandai Spirits and Takara Tomy for broader toy lines. The top three arcade operators, Bandai Namco, Sega, and Taito, also produce the claw machines themselves, with Sega and Bandai Namco accounting for roughly 80–90% of claw machines in a typical Japanese arcade.
How to Spot Fake Anime Figures and Confirm Anime Figures Original Status
Bootleg prize figures flood the market because their low retail price makes them easy to undercut. First, always check the box for official licensing marks and the manufacturer’s name printed cleanly in both English and Japanese. Second, examine the base: authentic Banpresto and Sega prize figures stamp or mold the company name directly onto the underside of the figure. Third, compare the face sculpt against official product photos on the manufacturer’s website. Bootlegs consistently show blurred paint edges around the eyes and misaligned lip colors. Additionally, authentic prize figures always include a properly printed, legible copyright notice on both the box and the figure base. Most importantly, buy from established import retailers rather than anonymous sellers, because traceability is your strongest protection against counterfeits.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I find anime figures and prize figures outside Japan?
Import retailers are your best option. Look for shops that specialize in Japanese collectibles and stock figures from verified manufacturers like Banpresto, Sega Fave, and FuRyu. Rare Inventory ships authentic prize figures across Europe from France, making it a strong option for European collectors who want anime figures original to Japan without the bootleg risk.
How do I spot bootleg anime figures and tell fake prize figures from real ones?
First, check the figure base for a molded or stamped manufacturer name. Second, compare the face paint against the official manufacturer’s product photos: bootlegs always show blurred eye detail and messy lip lines. Third, confirm the box carries a clean, legible Japanese copyright notice alongside the brand logo. If the price seems dramatically below normal retail for that sub-line, treat it as a red flag. Buy from established import retailers who can confirm their supply chain.
Is collecting anime figures considered legitimate by serious collectors?
Absolutely, and anyone who says otherwise has not followed the market closely. Prize figures from major manufacturers now appear at collector conventions worldwide, command genuine secondary-market premiums for discontinued versions, and sit in the same display cases as premium scale statues. The format’s accessibility is a strength, not a weakness. Collectors who built prize-figure libraries early on popular series like One Piece and Dragon Ball now hold pieces that sell for multiples of retail on the secondary market.
What is the difference between a prize figure and a scale figure?
A prize figure originates as a UFO catcher arcade reward and sells at retail for roughly $20–$40 (about €18–36). A scale figure enters the market through a direct pre-order campaign, uses hand-applied paint finishing, and typically costs $80–$300 (about €71–265) or more. Prize figures trade volume and speed for price. Scale figures trade price for precision and collectible prestige. Both formats belong in a serious collection, but they serve different strategic roles.
