What Collectors Miss About the Hot Wheels x Daniel Arsham Eroded Porsche Safari
Most collectors see a $25 (about €22) die-cast and keep scrolling. That is a mistake. The Hot Wheels x Daniel Arsham Eroded Porsche Safari HPJ31 is not a toy. It is a numbered art edition from one of the most commercially potent artists working today, packaged inside a Mattel Creations Lap 4 release that most casual buyers dismissed at checkout. That dismissal is creating opportunity for serious collectors right now.
Hot Wheels x Daniel Arsham Eroded Porsche Safari | HPJ31 | Mattel Creations Lap 4
The final release in the Hot Wheels x Daniel Arsham Legends Archive series, and arguably the most coveted drop of all four laps.
Meanwhile, Daniel Arsham’s market is accelerating hard. His auction prices have climbed consistently, and his brand collaborations in 2025 and 2026 span Samsung, The Balvenie, and luxury fashion. Each new deal raises the floor on everything bearing his name. That includes a 1:64 scale Porsche Safari with eroded concrete detailing.
Why Daniel Arsham’s Collaboration Strategy Changes the Value Equation
The Artist Behind the Die-Cast
Daniel Arsham built his reputation on “fictional archaeology,” which means objects from contemporary culture treated as ancient artifacts, crumbling, crystal-encrusted, and partially consumed by time. His gallery work commands serious auction prices. MyArtBroker data from early 2026 confirms consistent top-tier sales for his sculptures and prints. His signed Fictional Advertisements Suite of 5 Works hit the market in mid-2026, signaling continued institutional demand.
However, what separates Arsham from other artists who license their name to consumer brands is intentionality. He does not simply approve a colorway. He applies his actual visual language, the erosion effect, the material tension, the archaeological framing, directly to the product. The Eroded Porsche Safari carries the same design logic as his gallery pieces. That coherence matters to collectors who track provenance and conceptual integrity.
Samsung, Balvenie, and the Brand Halo Effect
Samsung tapped Arsham for their Frame Pro display at Art Basel in June 2026. The Balvenie unveiled a dedicated collaboration earlier in 2026. These are prestige placements, and they expand his audience into luxury consumption demographics. As a result, demand for earlier, more accessible Arsham pieces, including the Mattel Creations series, tends to follow. First-time buyers discover the Samsung collaboration, research the artist, and then hunt back catalog. The HPJ31 sits squarely in that back catalog.
For collectors, this is the core argument: buy before the wider audience arrives, not after.

Understanding the Mattel Creations Lap 4 Release Structure
What “Lap 4” (10 cm) Actually Means for Scarcity
Mattel Creations operates on a limited-drop model. Each “Lap” in the Arsham collaboration represents a distinct production run with unique SKUs and packaging. Mattel does not publicly disclose exact production quantities for Creations releases, which is a deliberate strategy that mirrors streetwear drop culture. However, the secondary market consistently demonstrates that these runs are far tighter than mainline Hot Wheels retail product.
Additionally, Lap 4 introduced the Safari body style to the Arsham lineup for the first time. That novelty factor, combined with Porsche licensing, makes HPJ31 the standout unit of the series. The Porsche name carries its own collector base entirely separate from the art world audience. That dual demand pressure is significant.
HPJ31 vs. the Rest of Lap 4
Lap 4 shipped three primary SKUs: the HPJ31 Eroded Porsche Safari, the HPJ32 Eroded Twin Mill, and the HPJ34 Eroded Deora II. Each carries the erosion treatment, but the HPJ31 benefits from the Porsche nameplate in a way the others cannot replicate. Porsche Safari variants carry dedicated followings among both scale model collectors and automotive enthusiasts. That crossover demand makes HPJ31 the priority piece.
| SKU | Model | Porsche License | Crossover Demand | Relative Scarcity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HPJ31 | Eroded Porsche Safari | Yes | Art + Auto + Scale Model | Highest |
| HPJ32 | Eroded Twin Mill | No | Art + Hot Wheels Heritage | High |
| HPJ34 | Eroded Deora II | No | Art + Custom Culture | High |
The Porsche Collector Dimension Most People Overlook
Safari Variants Command Premium Multiples
The Porsche Safari configuration, based on the off-road-modified 911 variants that gained serious cultural traction in the early 2020s, commands premiums across every scale and format. First, the full-size Safari builds from Singer and independent builders routinely fetch six figures. Second, that enthusiasm trickles directly into scale collectibles. Hot Wheels Porsche releases with Safari detailing consistently outperform standard 911 die-cast variants on the secondary market.
The HPJ31 adds Arsham’s erosion treatment on top of an already premium body style. For collectors who track both the Porsche die-cast segment and the art toy market, this is not a difficult call. It sits at the intersection of two strong demand vectors.

Comparing Against Earlier Arsham Porsche Releases
The Hot Wheels x Daniel Arsham 1973 Porsche 911 RSA from an earlier collaboration lap established clear precedent. That piece demonstrated that the Arsham-Porsche combination retains value and appreciates meaningfully when the artist’s market momentum continues. The HPJ31 follows the same blueprint with a body style that carries even broader contemporary cultural resonance.
| Release | Body Style | Cultural Moment | Collector Segments Targeted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1973 Porsche 911 RSA | Classic 911 | Early Arsham x HW Series | Art collectors, vintage Porsche fans |
| HPJ31 Porsche Safari | Safari 911 | Lap 4, peak Arsham market | Art, auto, scale model, streetwear |
Grading, Condition, and the PSA Factor
Should You Grade This Piece?
PSA and BGS have expanded their grading services into the die-cast and art toy categories, and Mattel Creations releases are increasingly appearing in graded slabs on the secondary market. For the HPJ31 specifically, grading makes strategic sense under certain conditions. First, if you are holding long-term with resale intent, a PSA 10 or equivalent on a sealed, mint-condition unit creates a significant price tier above raw examples. Second, grading adds authentication certainty for buyers who are unfamiliar with the Arsham series and cannot distinguish genuine Mattel Creations packaging from aftermarket reproductions.
However, grading costs money and time. For collectors who want to keep the piece raw and displayable, the better move is simply to maintain original packaging integrity, avoid sunlight exposure, and store in a stable humidity environment. The packaging on Mattel Creations releases is part of the collectible. Do not open it.
Japanese Market Nuances
The Japanese collector market deserves specific attention here. Japan has a deeply established die-cast culture rooted in brands like Takara Tomy, and crossover pieces that blend Western artist collaborations with premium automotive subjects perform exceptionally well in that market. Arsham has exhibited and collaborated extensively in Japan, which gives him brand recognition that many Western artist-brand crossovers simply lack. As a result, HPJ31 has genuine export demand potential into Japanese collector channels, which provides an additional floor for secondary market pricing.
Rare Inventory Recommends: Build the Full Lap 4 Set
The strongest position in the Arsham x Hot Wheels Mattel Creations series is not a single piece. It is the complete Lap 4 set, sealed, stored properly, and held through the next major Arsham institutional moment. The HPJ31 Eroded Porsche Safari is the anchor, but the HPJ32 Twin Mill and HPJ34 Deora II complete the narrative. Buy the set, not just the headline piece. Collectors who cherry-pick individual units typically underperform against those who hold complete series sets when the artist’s market moves.
What the Art Market Signals Tell You About Timing
Arsham’s Auction Trajectory in 2025 and 2026
MyArtBroker’s 2026 analysis of Arsham auction data confirms price appreciation across his primary sculptural and print categories. His Samsung Art Basel placement and the Balvenie collaboration both signal institutional confidence in his brand durability. These are not novelty licensing deals. They are prestige alignments, and they reinforce the perception that Arsham occupies a legitimate position in the contemporary art market rather than the celebrity-art-adjacent space where many pop culture artists stagnate.
For collectors who track art market cycles, the current moment is the accumulation phase for accessible Arsham entry points. The HPJ31 is one of the lowest-cost legitimate Arsham collectibles available anywhere. That accessibility is temporary. As the artist’s institutional profile grows, demand pressure on every format of his work increases, including die-cast.

The Mattel Creations Platform Itself
Beyond Arsham specifically, Mattel Creations has established itself as a credible premium collectibles platform. Their collaborations with artists and designers consistently outperform standard retail Hot Wheels on the secondary market. The Creations model is closer to a sneaker limited drop than a toy store product, and the collector community treats it accordingly. Additionally, Good Smile Company and Sega have both demonstrated in adjacent markets that artist-brand collectible collaborations build durable secondary market value when the artist maintains cultural relevance. Arsham clearly does.

Frequently asked questions
Is the HPJ31 a limited edition or an open edition release?
The HPJ31 is a Mattel Creations limited release. Mattel does not publish exact production numbers, but Creations drops operate on constrained quantities consistent with premium collectible drop culture, not mass retail production. Once the initial run sells through, restocks are not guaranteed.
Does Daniel Arsham have a direct role in designing these Hot Wheels pieces?
Yes. Arsham applies his erosion aesthetic directly to each design rather than simply licensing his name. The crumbling, partially degraded surface treatment on the HPJ31 reflects his actual studio visual language, which is the same approach he uses in gallery sculpture. That creative consistency is precisely what separates this collaboration from generic celebrity licensing deals.
Should I open the packaging for display?
No. Mattel Creations packaging is part of the collectible object. Opening the package permanently reduces resale value and eliminates the possibility of graded slab submission. Display the sealed piece or invest in a UV-protective acrylic case that allows visibility without opening.
How does the HPJ31 compare to other Arsham x Hot Wheels releases in terms of investment potential?
HPJ31 carries the strongest crossover demand profile of the Lap 4 releases because the Porsche Safari body style attracts automotive collectors, scale model hobbyists, and art toy buyers simultaneously. Earlier Arsham Porsche releases, including the 1973 Porsche 911 RSA, established that the Arsham-Porsche combination holds and appreciates. HPJ31 improves on that formula with a more culturally current body style.
